It’s 50 years to the day since the first cell phone call
American engineer Marty Cooper, now 94, who worked for Motorola at the time, thought it would be amusing to make the first call to Joel Engel, his counterpart at rival company Bell Laboratories (then the research division of AT&T and now part of Nokia).DigitalTrends writes about it here.

EU lawmakers impose single charger for all smartphones
The EU parliament on Tuesday passed a new law requiring USB-C to be the single charger standard for all new smartphones, tablets and cameras from late 2024.
Apple resisted EU legislation to force a change away from its Lightning ports on its iPhones, saying that was disproportionate and would stifle innovation.

Micron and Western Digital’s SanDisk brand both showcased their UHS-I microSDXC products at the Mobile World Congress which is being held in Barcelona, Spain.
Whereas Western Digital's 1TB SanDisk Extreme® UHS-I microSDXC™ card can reach a read speed of 160 MB/s [source], Micron Technology's Micron c200 1TB microSDXC UHS-I card can reach a read speed of 100MB/s [source].

Galaxy Note 7 prohibited in airplanes by FAA
The Federal Aviation Administration officially banned Galaxy Note 7s from being brought onto airplanes earlier this week, and under a new Emergency Restriction / Prohibition Order, it’s now a federal crime to fly with the device.

Megaupload file-sharing site shut down
Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US. Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue. The firm says it was diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.
