Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes sentenced to more than 11 years in prison

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes was sentenced by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to more than 11 years in prison for fraud after deceiving investors about the purported efficacy of her company’s blood-testing technology. She was ordered to surrender on April 27. Once valued at $9 billion by private investors, Theranos shut down in 2018.

Chartr in September 2021 while sharing a chart on the Rise & Fall of Theranos wrote: Elizabeth Holmes' grand vision was in blood testing. Theranos supposedly developed, or would develop, a way to run 200+ medical tests, from just a few drops of blood. That pitch ended up raising millions in funding, each round building hype and expectation that saw Holmes meet world leaders, go on TV and amass a personal fortune of $4.5bn+ on paper, as Theranos reached a dizzying $9bn valuation in early 2014.

EU lawmakers impose single charger for all smartphones

The EU parliament on Tuesday passed a new law requiring USB-C to be the single charger standard for all new smartphones, tablets and cameras from late 2024.

Apple resisted EU legislation to force a change away from its Lightning ports on its iPhones, saying that was disproportionate and would stifle innovation.

Is it time to retire C and C++ for Rust in new programs?

Mark Russinovich, Microsoft Azure's CTO, tweeted that "it's time to halt starting any new projects in C/C++ and use Rust for those scenarios where a non-GC language is required. For the sake of security and reliability. The industry should declare those languages as deprecated."

...

Both languages are "memory-unsafe." They give developers fine-grained control of their application's memory, but with great power comes great potential for trouble. One memory snowball slip-up can lead to an avalanche of errors.

...

Rust, on the other hand, is a memory-safe language.

Yahoo! Mail welcome message that I received in 2001

I was going through my archives and found this one from 2001 when I had created my first Yahoo! account.

It has been over 20 years since and the way that we use the internet today has transformed radically.

Many of the services listed by Yahoo! in the screenshot here don't exist anymore or I have not used them for very long.

Yahoo! Messenger: This was a widely used instant messaging service during those days but was shut down on July 17, 2018. It was replaced by a new service called Yahoo! Together, but that one was also shut down in 2019.

Yahoo! Companion: This was a browser toolbar plugin which would nicely snap under Internet Explorer's main toolbar. It had direct buttons for search, news, pop-up blocker, e-mail and other Yahoo! services. A screenshot of its look and feel can be found here.
