Using Wikipedia's AutoWikiBrowser for Basic Typo Cleanup of Random Pages

So you’ve recently received the privilege to use Wikipedia’s AutoWikiBrowser (AWB) and you’re eager to dive in. Congratulations — AWB is one of the most powerful semi-automated editing tools available to experienced Wikipedians, and once you get the hang of it, you’ll find yourself cleaning up articles at a pace that would be impossible manually. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the basic usage of AWB, focusing on how to find random pages that need cleanup and apply predefined regular expressions to fix typos.

The regular expressions (regex) used for typo fixing are already documented in detail at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos, so I won’t reinvent the wheel here. Instead, I’ll show you how to put them into practice inside AWB. For this article I have used AutoWikiBrowser version 6.4.0.0.

Before You Begin

I’m not covering how to download, install, or run AWB — those steps are explained thoroughly at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser. Since you’ve already gotten access, I’ll assume you’re familiar with Wikipedia editing basics and understand the site’s formatting rules and conventions. AWB is not a beginner’s tool; it’s meant for editors who already know their way around wikitext.

Step 1: Launch AWB

  1. Fire up AWB from wherever you installed it

  2. On the bottom-right corner of the window, you’ll see the User section in the status bar. Click on it to open the Profiles window. If you’ve logged in before, simply select your profile and click Login. If this is your first time, you’ll need to add a profile by entering your Wikipedia username and password. AWB will then remember your credentials for future sessions.

    Log in to AutoWikiBrowser

Step 2: Generate a List of Articles

  1. Once logged in, the next step is to create a list of random articles to work on.
    1. In the Source dropdown, select Random pages

      Select Random pages

    2. Click the Make list button, and AWB will generate a batch of articles for you

      Click on Make list

Step 3: Configure Options

  1. In the Options tab, check the box for Regex typo fixing and Skip if no typo fixed

    Select Regex

  2. Leave the More tab untouched for now

    Leave the More tag untouched

  3. Leave the Disambig tab untouched for now

    Leave the Disabuig tag untouched

  4. Leave the Skip tab untouched for now

    Leave the Skip tag untouched

Step 4: Set Up the Start Tab

  1. In the Start tab, make sure that the Default Summary is set to clean up. Then click Start to start scanning the pages for typos

Set Default Summary to clean up

Step 5: Review and Save Changes

When AWB finds a match, the Diff for the page will appear in the display pane at the top. The page’s wikitext will be shown in the Edit box tab below.
  1. If you don't want to include a particular recommendation, double-click the line in the Diff display pane to exclude it

    Double-click to exclude

  2. On occasions when AWB's suggestion doesn't look right, you can manually tweak the wikitext in the Edit box panel at the bottom before saving

    Edit wikitext

  3. Once you are satisfied. click Save to commit your changes to Wikipedia

    Save changes

Final Thoughts

That’s it — you’ve just completed your first round of typo cleanup using AWB. The tool may feel overwhelming at first, but once you get comfortable with the workflow, it becomes second nature. AWB is designed to speed up repetitive tasks, but it still relies on your judgment as an editor. Always review changes carefully before saving — automation is powerful, but accuracy is what keeps Wikipedia reliable.

My Cold Winter Discovery of the Millbury Classic Cars & Trucks Museum

It was one of those biting, cold winter November mornings in Ohio where the sky is clear and the sun shines bright. I was driving aimlessly along the country backroads, watching the dormant cornfields rush by. I wasn’t planning on stopping anywhere when I saw a sign for the Millbury Classic Cars & Trucks Museum.

It sat at 26929 Cummings Rd, Millbury, OH 43447, a large, unassuming building that you might mistake for a warehouse if not for the signage. I pulled a U-turn right there on the empty road and pulled into the lot.

The entry fee was $12 for adults. For those planning a visit with family, seniors and kids get in for $8, and little ones under 5 are free.

Everywhere you look, there is neon—vintage signs for Pontiac, Chevrolet, Route 66, and old gas pumps standing like sentinels from a bygone era. The collection on display includes over 90 cars and trucks ranging from American muscle to TV icons.

Here I am posting a selection of photos which I shot during the visit.

The entrance sets the perfect retro tone with beautifully restored vintage gas pumps, proudly displaying the iconic Texaco star and Fire-Chief Gasoline branding. The classic red and white color scheme of the pumps, paired with the large Texaco sign mounted on the pole, instantly transports you back to the golden age of full-service filling stations.

Center stage was a stunning 1982 DeLorean DMC-12, fully converted into the time machine from Back to the Future. It was displayed on a turntable with the gull-wing door propped open.

It was displayed on a turntable with the gull-wing door propped open, showing off all the movie-accurate wiring and gadgets along the side.

One of the most beloved cars in movie history: Herbie the Love Bug. The little white Volkswagen Beetle looks exactly like from the Disney classics, sporting the signature red, white, and blue racing stripes and the famous number "53" emblazoned on the hood. Flanked by a bright yellow Sunray Gasoline pump.

The psychedelic teal, green, and orange color scheme of the Mystery Machine van from Scooby Doo is vibrant enough to wake you up on a cold morning. The display also featured life-sized figures of the entire teenage detective squad—Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy—standing alongside the sliding door.

The collection on display includes over 90 cars and trucks and various artifacts from the bygone era.

A 1976 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser finished in a classic baby blue with a white roof. The placard revealed it’s a "Resto-Mod" beast, swapping the original engine for a 350 V8 and upgrading to an NV4500 transmission and disc brakes.

A 1967 Ford Fairlane 500 XL finished in a beautiful champagne gold, this car perfectly captures the transition from cruising to racing.

The 1969 Yenko Chevelle in bright orange and black screams performance.

The 1962 Chevrolet Impala was pure elegance in chrome and steel. This is a classic "sleeper," packing a massive 454 cubic inch V8 that puts out 525 horsepower, all controlled by a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission.

The 1966 Pontiac GTO with a powerful 389 cubic inch V8 engine stood proudly in a striking cream/yellow color.

A signage of Phillips 66, which is a major American energy company behind a cherry-red 1965 Chevrolet Nova.

This flawless 1968 Chevrolet C10 featured custom wheels and a beautiful wood floor in the truck bed. Under the hood there was a modern fuel-injected LS 5.3 Vortec engine.

A 1967 Austin Model FX4 in its day was the most widely used taxi in London. The cab on display still had the original diesel engine and that the old "Tax Hire" meter is visible inside.

A 1972 Volkswagen Beetle with an I4 1.5L engine under the hood, rear wheel drive and tan interior.

A bright yellow and white Brazilian-built 1975 Volkswagen Type 2 bus restored as a 23-window Deluxe Samba with 4-speed manual transmission, sliding sunroof and whitewall tires.

There is a replica of a barber shop with all props restored in the perfect olden style.

The International Harvester B-Series pickup truck built between 1959 to 1961 before being replaced by the C-Series.

The Cadillac Eldorado luxury car manufactured and marketed by the Cadillac Motor Car Division of General Motors.

A vintage sign for the Texaco petroleum and gasoline.
